Intense Thunderstorms Expected in Tunisia and Eastern Algeria

Intense thunderstorms accompanied by locally heavy rainfall and strong winds are expected this Saturday afternoon in several regions of Tunisia and eastern Algeria, announced the Tunisian Observatory of Meteorology and Climate.

The first thunderstorm cells have been observed in the Algerian provinces of Khenchela and Tébessa before heading towards the central-western region of Tunisia, particularly Kasserine and Sidi Bouzid, where strong electrical and rainy activity is forecasted. The instability could then affect Gafsa, the south of Kairouan, and the west of Sfax, before reaching certain coastal areas such as Monastir, Mahdia, and Sousse.

According to forecasts, the expected phenomena include:

  • Intense precipitation
  • Flash flooding
  • Downbursts
  • Hail showers, sometimes of significant size

In the southwest of the country (Gafsa, Tozeur, Kébili, Gabès), these disturbances could be accompanied by sandstorms or local storms.

The Observatory specifies that these phenomena will remain localized and will not affect all of the signaled areas, but calls for vigilance, particularly in the most exposed regions: Kasserine, Sidi Bouzid, and the north of Gafsa.
