Tunisian Minister of National Defense Visits Algeria

On a working visit to Algeria from October 6 to 8, Tunisian Minister of National Defense Khaled Sehili was received on Tuesday evening in Algiers by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Strengthening Fraternal Ties

On this occasion, Khaled Sehili praised the depth of the fraternal and historical ties that unite Tunisia and Algeria, highlighting the convergence of positions on most regional and international issues. He also conveyed to the Algerian Head of State the greetings of President Kaïs Saïed, Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, as well as his wishes for prosperity and stability for the Algerian people.

Military Cooperation Discussions

During this visit, the Minister also met with Army General Saïd Chengriha, Delegate Minister to the Minister of National Defense and Chief of Staff of the People's National Army, in the presence of high-ranking military officials from both countries. He also paid his respects at the Martyrs' Sanctuary by laying a wreath of flowers.

Bilateral Coordination and Security Threats

The discussions focused on the prospects for military cooperation and bilateral coordination mechanisms to address regional security threats, such as terrorism, human trafficking, irregular migration, smuggling, and organized cross-border crime. Both parties emphasized the importance of strengthening regular consultation, following the recommendations of sectoral commissions, and periodically holding the Tunisian-Algerian joint military commission.

Developing Cooperation and Training

Khaled Sehili stressed the need to develop training, exercises, and information exchange, while intensifying participation in military exercises and meetings organized by one or both countries. For his part, General Chengriha praised the "exemplary" cooperation relations between the two countries and highlighted the strategic value of the agreement signed during this visit.

New Defense Cooperation Agreement

The meeting concluded with the signing of a new defensive cooperation agreement. This agreement covers several areas: training, exercises, expertise and intelligence exchange, joint work reinforcement, and border security.

Consolidating Strategic Partnership

This agreement, which complements the one signed in 2001, expands the scope of military cooperation and marks a new stage in the Tunisian-Algerian strategic partnership. It aims to respond to current security challenges and consolidate stability and security in the region, based on mutual trust and respect.
