Increase in Japanese Tourists Visiting Tunisia
Approximately 3761 Japanese tourists visited Tunisia as of September 20, 2025, representing a 34.2% increase compared to the same period in 2024, but a 33.5% decrease compared to 2019. This number is expected to reach nearly 7800 visitors by the end of the year, according to Mohamed Fadhel Oueslati, the representative of the Tunisian embassy in Japan, who spoke to the TAP agency on Tuesday.
Participation in the International Tourism Fair
On the sidelines of the 2025 World Expo, held from April 13 to October 13 in Osaka, Oueslati noted that Tunisia, represented by the National Office of Tourism and Handicrafts and the embassy in Tokyo, participated in the International Tourism Fair in Nagoya from September 25 to 28. The event attracted over 182,000 visitors, despite the city having a population of only 2.5 million.
The Tunisian delegation consisted of three professionals and two artisans. On September 27, they met with Atsushi Sakai, Vice-President of the Japanese Association of Travel Agents (JATA), to discuss ways to strengthen the promotion of Tunisia as a tourist destination for Japanese travelers.
Challenges and Solutions
According to Oueslati, Sakai highlighted that the high cost of air tickets, which has tripled since the pandemic, is one of the main obstacles. To address this issue, it was proposed to conclude agreements between the National Office of Tourism and Japanese agencies to reduce travel costs.
Future Promotion Plans
As part of this promotion program, Tunisia also plans to:
- Integrate Japanese cruises into its circuits
- Invite Japanese influencers to the Tozeur parachuting festival scheduled for October
- Promote cultural tourism, a product particularly appreciated by Japanese travelers
