Tunisia's Health Authorities Estimate 7,700 People Living with HIV/AIDS by 2025
Tunisian health authorities estimate that by 2025, the country could have 7,700 people living with HIV/AIDS and record 700 new cases. As of December 2024, at least 2,236 people were undergoing treatment, including 1,529 men, 665 women, and 39 children, while 415 new cases were reported, with 200 cases among foreigners, according to Dr. Samir Makrani, coordinator of the national AIDS control program at the Ministry of Health. Dr. Makrani specified that sex workers and people who inject drugs remain the most vulnerable populations to the virus. He also highlighted the ministry's efforts to modernize the four existing free treatment centers, particularly through updating tracking software and strengthening hospital infrastructure and diagnostic centers in Monastir and El Rabta, with a planned extension to Nabeul, Sfax, and Bizerte. Meanwhile, initiatives are underway to improve prevention mechanisms and early detection in private hospitals and laboratories, with a particular focus on awareness and protection of young people.
