Household Waste in Tunisia Estimated at 3.7 Million Tons Per Year

The volume of household waste in Tunisia is estimated to be around 3.7 million tons per year, which translates to approximately 10,300 tons per day, according to Mounir Waer, Deputy Director of the General Directorate of Urban Planning and Cleaning at the Ministry of Interior.

Interview with Mounir Waer

In an interview with the national radio on Monday, December 1, 2025, Mounir Waer specified that this volume is in addition to demolition and construction waste. He noted that the waste collection rate reaches 79%, but the problem persists for the remaining 21%, which continues to pollute public spaces and deteriorate the environment.

Emergency Action Plan

In response to this situation, the Ministry of Interior has launched an emergency action plan aimed at improving cleanliness, strengthening waste collection, and preserving the environment.

Modernization of Waste Collection Fleet

The official explained that the current fleet consists of 25% compactors and 45% tractors. The ministry plans to modernize and reinforce this fleet to cover more areas in less time. A total of 465 new vehicles will be added to the existing 3,500 vehicles. These new equipment will be imported and are expected to be available in Tunisia by June 2026, benefiting 20 municipalities.

Integration of Municipalities into Controlled Disposal System

Mounir Waer expressed regret over the 156 municipalities that are not yet integrated into the controlled disposal system. The ministry has concluded a contract to provide temporary solutions until controlled landfills are established. The interventions will target 149 sites located in the governorates of Mahdia, Le Kef, Siliana, Kasserine, and Sidi Bouzid.
