Phosphate Transport Railway Network Reinforcement Project
The first phase of the phosphate transport railway network reinforcement and renovation project in the southern region of the country, covering the Gafsa – Sfax – Gabès triangle, has been scheduled with a total cost of approximately $166 million. This project is part of a global investment program aimed at modernizing infrastructure and increasing the productivity of freight and passenger rail transport.
According to sources from the Tunisian National Railway Company (SNCFT), reported by Express FM radio, this project is part of the company's strategy to improve its logistical capabilities on lines #13 and #21, as well as to rehabilitate the main corridors for phosphate transport from the mining basin cities to the customers of the Gafsa Phosphate Company.
The same sources indicate that this program is among the major projects intended to strengthen strategic transport networks in the south. The investment aims to increase transport capacity and ensure the regularity of trains, thereby reducing pressure on the network and optimizing convoy productivity. This is particularly important in a context where the industrial sector urgently needs regularity in loading and supply operations.
During the first half of 2025, the SNCFT transported approximately 780,000 tons of commercial phosphate by train from the Gafsa Phosphate Company's (CPG) washing plants to the Tunisian Chemical Group's (GCT) factories, at a rate of four trains per day.
