Waste Management in Tunisia: Challenges and Solutions
In Tunisia, the annual volume of household waste reaches 3.7 million tons, which translates to 10,300 tons per day, according to Mounir Waer, Deputy Director of the General Directorate of Urban Planning and Cleaning at the Ministry of Interior.
Current Situation
Although 79% of waste is collected, 21% still evades collection, polluting public spaces and degrading the environment. Among the areas not covered, 156 municipalities are not part of the controlled landfill system, highlighting a major challenge for waste management.
Action Plan
To address this issue, the ministry has launched an emergency action plan, including the modernization of the collection fleet. 465 new vehicles will reinforce the existing 3,500 vehicles by June 2026, serving 20 municipalities.
Temporary Solutions
Temporary solutions are planned for municipalities outside the system, with interventions on 149 sites in the governorates of Mahdia, Le Kef, Siliana, Kasserine, and Sidi Bouzid, pending the establishment of controlled landfills.
