Tunisia Sees 10% Increase in Natural Gas Demand

Tunisia has recorded a 10% increase in its natural gas demand as of July 2025, reaching 2.9 million tons of oil equivalent (Mtep), according to the latest report from the National Observatory of Energy and Mines.

The Driving Force: Electricity

Nearly 72% of natural gas is used for electricity production, a sector that has seen significant growth with a 13% increase in consumption. Other uses have only increased by 3%, confirming that electricity is driving national demand.

Petroleum Products: Modest Increase, Notable Contrasts

The overall consumption of petroleum products has only increased by 1%, but internal variations are significant:

  • Gasoline: +2%
  • Aviation kerosene: +10%
  • Diesel: -1%

Other Energies on the Move

Meanwhile, the use of petroleum coke has increased by 3%, while liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) has seen a more notable increase of 5%.

A Demand that Reflects National Priorities

These developments highlight a key fact: Tunisia's energy security still largely depends on natural gas and oil, with growing pressure from the electricity sector.

In Brief:

  • Natural gas demand: +10%
  • Electricity consumption: +13%
  • Gasoline: +2% | Aviation kerosene: +10% | Diesel: -1%
  • LPG: +5% | Petroleum coke: +3%
