Meeting Focuses on Cooperation Between STEG and World Bank Group

The Ministerial Committee, under the Ministry of Industry, Mines, and Energy, responsible for implementing the STEG's (Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company) contract-program by objectives for the period 2024-2028, held its second meeting yesterday, chaired by Minister Fatima Thabet Cheboub, according to a statement from the department.

Attendees and Objectives

The working session brought together the head of the cabinet, Afaf Chachi Tayari, the president and general manager of STEG, Faiçal Trifa, as well as representatives from the government presidency, the Ministry of Finance, and several officials from the ministry and STEG. The meeting emphasized the need to implement the various axes of the program within the set deadlines to ensure the achievement of better financial, technical, and commercial performance of the company and to improve the quality of its services while reducing the energy deficit.

Progress and Future Efforts

According to the ministry's statement, an improvement in certain indicators was noted, while emphasizing the need to continue providing additional efforts to achieve the expected objectives, particularly in terms of good governance in the electricity sector. The meeting also discussed the areas of cooperation between STEG and the World Bank Group for the next five years, which includes a financing agreement of $430 million (equivalent to 1.333 billion dinars) dedicated to improving the company's operational and financial performance, developing electricity supply, accelerating the implementation of renewable energy production projects, and reducing subsidy expenses to achieve energy independence.

Future Meetings

The department also highlights that other meetings will be organized during the coming period to follow up on the implementation of the action program. The cooperation between STEG and the World Bank Group is expected to play a significant role in achieving the company's objectives and contributing to the country's energy independence.
