Renovation of Montplaisir Japanese Garden in Tunis Resumes at Steady Pace

The renovation work on the Montplaisir Japanese Garden in Tunis has resumed at a steady pace, announced the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) in a statement released on Friday, October 10, 2025. This project is part of the efforts to strengthen Tunisian-Japanese cooperation, as the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries approaches in 2026.

The Resident Representative of JICA in Tunisia, Mayumi Miyata, visited the site on Thursday, where she met with Japanese volunteer Koji Bebo. Bebo presented her with a report on the progress of the work, which is being carried out in collaboration with the municipality of the city of Tunis.

A joint meeting was also held on site, bringing together Miyata, Bebo, and members of the Tunisian-Japanese Friendship Association, to coordinate efforts to further enhance this iconic space in the capital.

Inaugurated in 2006, the Montplaisir Japanese Garden spans approximately 6,000 square meters and features plants, flowers, and green spaces inspired by the Japanese landscape. It underwent renovation in 2022, on the occasion of the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD 8), hosted by Tunisia.

JICA emphasizes that the restoration of the site aims to preserve its architectural and landscape authenticity, faithful to traditional Japanese style, with its water basins, wooden bridges, and stone lanterns, surrounded by cherry blossoms and lotus flowers. The goal is to make it a space for relaxation, cultural dialogue, and discovery between the two peoples.

The year 2025 also marks the 50th anniversary of cooperation between Tunisia and JICA, a relationship based on joint projects in the fields of education, environment, and sustainable development.
