The Press — In the Face of Advancing Sands
In the Hezoua region, where the annual advancement of sand threatens homes, agricultural land, and access roads, a decisive initiative has emerged. Supported by a Tunisian-Italian partnership and driven by the mobilization of local residents, this reforestation effort has become a vital ecological barrier to protect the community.
Beyond a simple environmental project, this strategic approach aims to halt the progression of sand dunes, preserve the balance of the oasis, and ensure the stability of the entire territory, which is under constant pressure from the desert. The Tunisian-Italian partnership has led to a crucial action to protect the development area from the advancing sands in Tozeur.
Integrated Rural Development Project
This initiative is part of the Integrated Rural Development Project, a collaborative effort between Tunisia and Italy. The project involves the Directorate of Forests, in coordination with the Regional Commissioner for Agricultural Development, and the active participation of local residents. Together, they have launched a large-scale reforestation campaign in the development area bordering the Hezoua delegation.
Key Objectives
The operation covers an area of two and a half hectares and aims directly to protect the village and oasis from the rapid advancement of sand dunes. Due to the region's desert nature and distance from the delegation center, an agreement has been reached with the relevant services and the Italian Cooperation Agency to ensure irrigation of the planted area using a drip irrigation system. A specially equipped tractor has been made available to treat the sandy areas.
Ensuring Success
The goal is to guarantee the success of this reforestation operation, which is essential for improving living conditions, protecting agricultural land, and strengthening the village's resilience against the constant threat of sand pushed by desert winds throughout the year.
