Chinese Tourist Arrivals in Tunisia Jump 20 % During Spring Chinese New Year Holidays
Tourist arrivals from China to Tunisia recorded a 20 % increase during the Spring Chinese New Year holidays, which were held from 15 – 23 February 2026, according to estimates published by Chinese travel platforms.
This rise confirms the growing interest of Chinese travelers in Tunisia, said Anouar Chetaoui, director of the Tunisian National Tourism Office’s Beijing office.
In a statement to the TAP news agency, Chetaoui explained that the Chinese New Year period is the main peak travel window for trips originating from the People’s Republic of China. Every year, millions of people use the holiday to reunite with family before embarking on domestic or overseas tourism.
Overall Figures
- Nearly 28,000 Chinese tourists visited Tunisia in 2025, representing roughly a 20 % increase over the previous year.
- Despite the absence of a direct air link between the two countries, the trend remains upward.
Seasonal Outlook
The Lunar New Year holidays mark the start of the high season for Chinese arrivals, with a continued rise expected from February through June.
This year’s exceptionally long Spring Festival break—nine days instead of the usual six or seven—also helped boost travel, especially to foreign destinations.
Typically, the first few days are devoted to family gatherings, after which travelers set off on vacation. Chinese tourists are increasingly favoring foreign destinations that offer high safety standards and rich cultural heritage.
Tunisia’s Growing Visibility
During the Mid‑Autumn holidays of 2025, Tunisia was listed among the top five safest global destinations in the “Safe Choice” category of Tongcheng Travel, one of China’s leading online travel agencies.
Outlook for the Tunisian Tourism Market
The current momentum underscores the growth potential of the Chinese market for Tunisian tourism. The country’s historical heritage and diverse landscapes align well with the evolving expectations of Chinese travelers, who are seeking secure, culturally rich experiences abroad.
