Old and Torn Banknotes Circulating in the Tunisian Market on the Rise
According to banking law expert, Mohamed Nakheli, there has been an increase in the phenomenon of old and torn banknotes circulating in the Tunisian market. In a statement given to Mosaïque Fm on Tuesday, September 2, 2025, he explained that this situation can be attributed to several factors, including:
- Seizures made by security authorities as part of the fight against drug traffickers
- The tax amnesty, which encourages holders of undeclared funds to put them back into the banking system
- The recirculation of hidden funds due to fear of the issuance of a new currency These are among the main hypotheses.
Mohamed Nakheli called on citizens to be vigilant, recommending that they check the condition of banknotes before leaving banks or when withdrawing from ATMs. He also advised going to the Central Bank of Tunisia (BCT) to exchange damaged banknotes, particularly those with tears in the serial number area. This initiative aims to preserve the quality of the currency in circulation and ensure the security of financial transactions for all citizens.
