Road Accidents in Tunisia: Alarming Statistics

According to the National Observatory for Road Safety (ONSR) statistics, from the beginning of the year to December 4, the governorates of Tunis, Sfax, and Nabeul have recorded the highest number of road accident-related deaths.

  • The governorate of Tunis has recorded 112 deaths due to road accidents, followed by Sfax with 111 deaths, and Nabeul with 77 deaths.
  • Tunis also tops the list in terms of the number of traffic accidents, with 672 accidents, followed by Mahdia (399 accidents), Nabeul (313 accidents), Sfax (283 accidents), and Kasserine (265 accidents).
  • The governorates in the interior of the country have the highest mortality rate per million vehicles, with Kasserine leading at 55.4%, followed by Sidi Bouzid at 37.9%, and Kairouan at 37.6%.

Analysis and Recommendations

These statistics reveal a structural weakness in infrastructure, emergency services, and risky behaviors in the interior regions, requiring urgent and different intervention. The months of June, July, and August were the deadliest, with 127 deaths in June, 114 in July, and 135 in August. Most road accident-related deaths occurred between 6 am and 8 am (125 deaths) and between 4 pm and 10 pm (381 deaths).

Action Plans

According to the 2024 annual report on road safety, which is a unified working tool gathering various stakeholders in the field of road safety, action plans have been put in place, particularly during peak periods, to strengthen control and intervention, in addition to analyzing the different circumstances of accidents and their underlying causes.
