Tunisian Psychological Society Calls for Strict Adherence to Patient Confidentiality

The Tunisian Psychological Society has emphasized the need for strict adherence to the principle of patient data confidentiality, considering it a fundamental pillar of psychological work and a crucial element of trust between the specialist and the patient.

In a statement released on Wednesday, following the observation of a private psychotherapy session being published on social media, the Tunisian Psychological Society deemed this practice a serious violation of patient privacy and a breach of professional ethics.

The society affirmed that psychology offices are not spaces for publication or digital spectacle, and that any media or electronic interaction with patients outside of a professional setting constitutes a breach of the code of ethics.

On the other hand, the Association clarified that distance psychotherapy via applications or electronic platforms such as WhatsApp, Messenger, or others remains possible and legitimate, provided it takes place within a framework of absolute confidentiality and secrecy, without recording, publishing, or disseminating its content in any form.

Key points:

  • The Tunisian Psychological Society stresses the importance of patient confidentiality in psychological work
  • Publishing private psychotherapy sessions on social media is considered a serious breach of patient privacy and professional ethics
  • Distance psychotherapy is allowed, but must be conducted within a framework of absolute confidentiality and secrecy
  • Psychology offices are not spaces for publication or digital spectacle, and media or electronic interactions with patients must adhere to professional ethics guidelines.
