Tunisia's Trade Deficit Reaches -18,435.8 Million Dinars

The trade deficit stood at -18,435.8 million dinars at the end of October 2025, compared to -15,716.4 million dinars during the same period in 2024, the National Institute of Statistics (INS) announced on Wednesday. The coverage rate reached 73.9% compared to 76.7% during the same period in 2024.

Main Contributors to the Deficit

The deficit is mainly due to:

  • Energy: -9,181.5 million dinars
  • Raw materials and semi-finished products: -5,191.8 million dinars
  • Equipment goods: -2,927 million dinars
  • Consumer goods: -1,769.1 million dinars

On the other hand, the food group recorded a surplus of +633.6 million dinars.

Trade Balance Excluding Energy

The trade deficit excluding energy stands at -9,254.3 million dinars, while the energy balance deficit stands at -9,181.5 million dinars, compared to -9,396.7 million dinars during the first ten months of 2024.

1.1% Increase in Exports

The results of Tunisia's foreign trade at current prices during the first ten months of 2025 show that exports reached 52,214 million dinars, compared to 51,623.4 million dinars during the same period in 2024, an increase of 1.1%.

Sectoral Export Performance

Exports increased in the following sectors:

  • Mines, phosphates, and derivatives: +9.4%
  • Mechanical and electrical industries: +7.7%

Exports decreased in the following sectors:

  • Energy: -29.2% due to the decline in sales of refined products (790.5 million dinars compared to 1,646.4 million dinars)
  • Agri-food industries: -13.8% due to the decline in olive oil sales (3,062.1 million dinars compared to 4,175.1 million dinars)
  • Textile, clothing, and leather: -0.9%

Export Markets

Tunisian exports to the European Union (70.5% of total exports) reached 36,787.9 million dinars, compared to 35,807 million dinars during the same period in 2024. Exports increased with:

  • Germany: +10.7%
  • France: +9.6%
  • Netherlands: +6.4%

Exports decreased with:

  • Italy: -8.1%
  • Spain: -16.7%

Exports to Arab countries increased with:

  • Libya: +4.4%
  • Morocco: +36.1%
  • Algeria: +10.4%
  • Egypt: +35%

4.9% Increase in Imports

Imports reached 70,649.8 million dinars, compared to 67,339.7 million dinars during the same period in 2024, an increase of 4.9%.

Import Performance by Product Group

Imports increased in the following product groups:

  • Equipment goods: +14.5%
  • Raw materials and semi-finished products: +6.7%
  • Consumer goods: +10.9%

Imports decreased in the following product groups:

  • Energy products: -9.3%
  • Food products: -5.7%

Import Markets

Imports from the European Union (43.3% of total imports) reached 30,586.6 million dinars, compared to 29,209.5 million dinars during the first ten months of 2024. Imports increased with:

  • France: +11.8%
  • Germany: +8.1%

Imports decreased with:

  • Italy: -1.2%
  • Greece: -29.8%
  • Belgium: -8%

Outside the European Union, imports increased with:

  • China: +25.1%
  • Turkey: +13.6%

Imports decreased with:

  • Russia: -19.4%
  • India: -4.9%
