World Alzheimer's Day: Over 100,000 People in Tunisia Affected by the Disease
The president of the Tunisian Association for the Fight Against Alzheimer's Disease, Afef Hammami, stated that more than 100,000 people in Tunisia are directly suffering from Alzheimer's disease. Hundreds of thousands of their family members are also experiencing the psychological and social repercussions of this disease.
The Urgency of the Issue
On the occasion of World Alzheimer's Day, September 21, the geriatrics specialist explained to the TAP agency that these alarming statistics highlight the urgency of this health issue in Tunisia, which requires coordinated action to address it.
Virtual Awareness Campaign
The AFA ENTER center, specialized in the early diagnosis of memory disorders, will organize virtual events on Sunday, September 21. These events will include live sessions with experts on the center's social media platforms.
Objectives of the Campaign
The objective of this campaign is to raise awareness among as many people as possible, free of charge. It will focus on different aspects of Alzheimer's disease, including:
- Symptoms and Early Diagnosis: Understanding the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease and the importance of early diagnosis.
- Difference Between Alzheimer's and Other Forms of Dementia: Clarifying the differences between Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.
- Impact of Early Diagnosis on Quality of Life: Exploring how early diagnosis can improve the quality of life for patients.
- Global and Tunisian Statistics: Presenting the global and Tunisian statistics on Alzheimer's disease (55 million people affected worldwide, with the number expected to reach 140 million by 2050).
- Testimonials from Tunisian Families: Sharing the stories of Tunisian families living with the disease on a daily basis.
Prevention and Risk Management
The program will also emphasize prevention by discussing the role of a healthy lifestyle (nutrition, physical activity, mental exercises) and the management of risk factors such as hypertension and diabetes. The public will be encouraged to interact with experts to ask questions.
By raising awareness and promoting education, the campaign aims to support those affected by Alzheimer's disease and to encourage a coordinated effort to address this growing health concern in Tunisia.
