The School Facing Its Destiny

When Will a Specific Law Be Enacted to Immunize Our Schools and Educators at All Levels—from Primary to Secondary and University—Against Violence in All Its Forms?

Outlaws who do not hesitate to trample the integrity of educational institutions and to assault those responsible for the training of our children and youth—believing they can prevent them from receiving, in the future, the torch of construction and development—continue to act with impunity. Unfortunately, the judicial authorities only respond with a verbal reprimand or an insignificant fine that they will never pay.

We are not calling for these perpetrators to be sent to purgatory. However, it is our duty to urge legislators and experts to adopt a rational state‑policy approach that favors a law combining the immunization of schools and their communities with the definitive eradication of violence. This law should also aim to free violent offenders from their primitive impulses and make them understand that their behavior is unworthy of the status of citizens whose contribution is essential to the global project of progress and modernity.

The Head of State, a seasoned educator with proven experience in the Tunisian school system, is working at an intense pace so that our education system and its teachers regain their role as the driving force behind our national ambition to take off—ensuring that the world continues to applaud our achievements and draw inspiration from them.

Nevertheless, we must not underestimate the reservations expressed by some ministry specialists regarding the risk that contagion could spread to other sectors of national life if Parliament adopts the amendments currently being proposed to the law protecting schools from violence.

The ingenuity and skill of Tunisians, who have successfully overcome even more challenging trials, will enable us to devise solutions that satisfy everyone.
