The Tunisian Order of Engineers Calls for Transparency in the Use of the Title "Engineer"

The Tunisian Order of Engineers has urged higher education institutions to verify the accuracy of their use of the terms "engineer/engineering" in their advertisements and to be fully transparent about the legal rights conferred by their diplomas. The Order emphasized that not everyone who graduates from a university with a degree that uses the title of "engineer" is necessarily an engineer in the legal sense of the term.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, the Order indicated that it had recently observed the use of terms such as "engineer" or "engineering" in the advertisements of certain higher education institutions. These practices could lead the public to believe that the graduate automatically obtains the status of engineer or that the diploma guarantees it, which, according to the Order, is likely to mislead students and their parents.

The Order of Engineers asserted its right to take all legal measures and to pursue legal action against any illegal use of the terms "engineer" or "engineering" by individuals or institutions, in order to preserve the reputation of the profession and protect the legal rights of citizens and engineers.

The institution recalled that the engineering profession in Tunisia is legally governed by Decree No. 12 of 1982, ratified by Law No. 58 of 1982 and completed by Law No. 41 of 1997. Under this legislation, an engineer must be registered with the Tunisian Order of Engineers to obtain the legal right to use this title.
