Tunis Municipality Takes Action on Used Cooking Oil Waste
Tunis, February 2026 – The municipal management officer of Tunis, Sameh Daldoul, held a meeting on Monday at the municipal palace in the Kasbah with representatives of the association “Pour une Tunisie propre” and the Tunisian company Biodex, a leader in the collection and processing of used cooking oils and their conversion into bio‑fuels (biodiesel).
The gathering is part of the municipality’s commitment to protect the environment and promote a circular economy, notably through active participation in the national ValoZit program, which is overseen by the National Waste Management Agency (ANGED).
Objectives of the ValoZit Program
- Organise the collection of used cooking oils from households.
- Prevent the oils from being dumped into the natural environment or discharged into wastewater pipelines.
Why It Matters
- Tunisia wastes more than 50,000 tonnes of used cooking oil each year.
- This waste leads to significant environmental pollution and contributes to blockages in sewage networks—a problem that intensifies during the holy month of Ramadan, when cooking‑oil consumption spikes.
Expected Impact
Through this initiative, the Municipality of Tunis aims to:
- Raise public awareness about the value of organic‑waste recycling.
- Strengthen the local circular economy by turning waste into a resource.
- Reduce the environmental footprint of food‑related waste.
The collaboration with “Pour une Tunisie propre” and Biodex underscores the city’s proactive stance on waste management and sustainable development.
