Tunis Municipality Collects 600 Tons of Waste Daily, Prepares for Tourist Season

In an interview with Radio Nationale on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, Chaker Bziouch, Director of Sanitation at the Tunis Municipality, revealed that the municipality collects 600 tons of household waste daily as part of its regular activities. He noted that during the Eid al-Adha period, sanitation agents collect an additional 300 tons of waste.

Mr. Bziouch emphasized that the Tunis Municipality bears a double responsibility as the capital city, which serves as the country's showcase. This explains the implementation of several programs aimed at improving municipal action in sanitation, including the constant renewal of equipment. "Since 2024, ten waste collection trucks, vans, and dump trucks have been acquired, as well as 1,400 containers," he said. He added that for the year 2026, the municipality has established a program worth 9 million dinars for the acquisition of various sanitation equipment, such as light and small-sized trucks, to adapt to the specificities of each area.

According to the official, 300 wall-mounted containers have recently been installed in the Bab El Bhar sector and on Habib Bourguiba Avenue. He also announced that a contract will soon be concluded for the acquisition of a new type of container.

Preparations for the Tourist and Summer Seasons

The official also discussed preparations for the tourist and summer seasons, noting that a particular emphasis is placed on tourist circuits. "From the beginning of May, manual street sweeping operations will be reinforced," he noted.

Mr. Bziouch called on citizens to support the municipality's efforts and contribute to maintaining the cleanliness of streets and the city by avoiding littering on public roads.

Regarding the fight against mosquitoes, the official stated that mosquito control operations extend throughout the year. "In anticipation of summer, interventions began in March via thermal nebulization and aerial spraying in the Sebkha de Sejoumi area. In addition to the municipality's daily activities, such as clearing building basements and weeding," he said.
