Ministry of Justice Urges Tunisian Human Rights League to Honor Commitments
The Ministry of Justice has pressed the Tunisian Human Rights League (LTDH) to ensure it honors its commitments stemming from a memorandum of understanding signed on July 10, 2015. This memorandum grants LTDH delegations the right to conduct visits to Tunisian prisons to inform themselves about the detention conditions of prisoners. In a statement published on Tuesday evening, the Ministry denied information relayed by the League through several press releases about a potential decision to terminate this memorandum, recalling that the League has not honored its commitments under this agreement, including the duty of neutrality and transparency. In this context, it condemned the allegations relayed by the LTDH regarding the situation of several detainees, reaffirming its firm commitment to maintaining this memorandum in force and working to respect human rights within the prison institution and to consecrate good practices recognized in this area. The Ministry of Justice's statement comes after the LTDH reported that its delegations had been repeatedly prevented from visiting prisons in Gafsa, Mahdia, Belli, Nadhour, and Borj Erroumi.
