Ministry of Health to Improve Healthcare Facilities in Gabès Governorate
The Ministry of Health is working to improve and develop healthcare facilities in the Gabès governorate through the creation of a cancer treatment center, with construction set to begin early next year, announced Minister of Health Moustafa Ferjani during a dialogue session held on Monday afternoon at the Assembly of People's Representatives (ARP) headquarters, in the presence of Minister of Equipment and Housing Salah Zouari.
New Cancer Treatment Center
Ferjani specified that his department is working to create a cancer treatment center in the Gabès governorate, with construction scheduled to start in late January by a Chinese company that will be selected later. "The center will be fully operational within two years, although the Ministry of Health is primarily adopting a preventive approach to cancer," he added.
Resumption of University Hospital Construction
The Minister of Health announced the resumption of construction work on the Gabès University Hospital after a hiatus of several years. "The work will be completed by next December," he specified.
Upgrades to the University Hospital
The hospital will be reinforced with 300 additional beds, two scanner machines, and a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine, as well as the use of digital technology and modern technologies for remote reading of medical results, in order to bring healthcare services closer to the region's inhabitants.
Specialties and Human Resources
Ferjani stated that the Gabès University Hospital includes 9 university specialties, which will be reinforced by 5 additional specialties, noting that the Ministry of Health is working to find solutions to the shortage of specialist doctors at the Gabès hospital and in the region's hospitals through the strengthening of human resources.
Recruitment of New Staff
He indicated that the Ministry of Health has planned to strengthen human resources and open 4,000 new positions in the health sector this year, according to the 2026 budget law project.
Rehabilitation of the Chemical Group
It is worth noting that the Minister of Health had announced earlier that the government has put in place a short- and medium-term plan to rehabilitate the chemical group in Gabès and reduce gas emissions.
