European Parliament Approves Resolution Calling for Recognition of Palestine
The European Parliament approved a resolution on Thursday urging European Union (EU) member states to "consider recognizing the State of Palestine, with the aim of achieving a two-state solution". The EU assembly voted in favor of a non-binding resolution, approved by the centrist majority groups. While the Parliament has supported the "principle of recognizing the Palestinian state" in the past, this new resolution appears to be a more direct call to national governments to take action. The resolution was approved with 305 votes in favor, 151 against, and 122 abstentions. According to Italian Socialist MEP Nicola Zingaretti, this result is the outcome of in-depth negotiations between political groups on different amendments.
