Tetra Pak Announces Collaboration with Swan Neck Bio to Simplify Scaling Opportunities for Food Producers
Tetra Pak has announced a new collaboration with Swan Neck Bio, a Denmark-based biotechnology company, to simplify and expand scaling opportunities for businesses developing biomass-derived or precision fermentation food products. This collaboration strengthens Tetra Pak's offering by giving manufacturers the option to use seeds as an ingredient, creating a turnkey solution for commercial fermentation processes in the New Food sector and beyond.
Key Benefits of the Collaboration
Through this collaboration, producers developing fermented foods will have access to Swan Neck Bio's DIRINOC™ technology, a stockable, concentrated, viable, and certified high-quality starter culture for direct inoculation that promotes the growth of the producer's organism without requiring the propagation of their own cultures. The use of DIRINOC™ can reduce the risk of contamination and offer production predictability. Given that many food producers fail to scale up due to contaminations or variable yields that differ from expectations, DIRINOC™ provides a low-risk solution that should reduce waste, decrease the total cost of equipment acquisition, and increase profitability.
Integration with Tetra Pak's Ecosystem
DIRINOC™ is also integrated into Tetra Pak's process development ecosystem, enabling producers to outsource the seed chain if they prefer to avoid a multi-step bioreactor process. This allows New Food producers to start trials without the resource intensity required for on-site culture propagation. DIRINOC™ will be available alongside existing seed chain and equipment solutions, which clients are already exploring at pilot scale at Tetra Pak's recently opened New Food Technology Development Centre in Karlshamn, Sweden.
