The death toll from the shooting that occurred on Sunday at Bondi Beach in Sydney has risen to 16, and a father and son have been identified as the perpetrators of the attack, police said on Monday. The New South Wales (NSW) police stated on Monday morning that 16 people had been confirmed dead after the shooting. According to a police statement, 14 people died at the scene and two others in the hospital. The victims range in age from 10 to 87 and include one of the shooters. On Monday morning, 40 other people were being treated in the hospital for injuries, with five in critical condition. NSW Police Commissioner Mal Lanyon said during a press conference on Monday morning that the two suspected shooters were a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son. The 50-year-old man, who was killed at the scene, held a firearms license and legally owned six guns, Commissioner Lanyon said. The shooting occurred on Sunday at around 6:47 p.m. local time when the two men opened fire on a crowd of at least 1,000 people who had gathered at the beach to celebrate the first day of the Jewish festival of Hanukkah (Festival of Lights). Commissioner Lanyon, who officially labeled the shooting a terrorist attack on Sunday evening, said on Monday that the investigation into the motives behind the attack was ongoing. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the attack was an act of "absolute evil" and that Australia would do everything necessary to eradicate anti-Semitism. "It's a scourge and we will eradicate it together," he said. This is the deadliest shooting in Australia since the Port Arthur massacre in the island state of Tasmania in 1996, which killed 35 people and led to fundamental changes in Australian gun ownership laws.
