Syrian President Ahmed al-Charaa Arrives in Washington for Official Visit
Syrian President Ahmed al-Charaa arrived in Washington on Saturday for an official visit, marking the first time a Syrian president has visited the White House.
According to the Syrian News Agency (SANA), President al-Charaa is scheduled to meet with his American counterpart, Donald Trump, on Monday, in what will be their third meeting, following previous discussions in Riyadh and New York.
This visit comes as Syria seeks to secure funding for reconstruction after 14 years of conflict. The talks between the two leaders are expected to cover regional and international issues, as well as the strengthening of bilateral relations, in the context of Washington's support for initiatives aimed at stabilizing Syria after years of war.
On Friday, the United States lifted sanctions imposed on President al-Charaa and Syrian Interior Minister Anas Khattab, a day after the UN Security Council adopted a similar resolution. The resolution was approved by 14 of the 15 members of the Council, with China abstaining. The names of the President and the Syrian Minister were thus removed from the list of international sanctions, paving the way for a resumption of diplomatic and economic relations between Syria and Western countries.
