Electronic Cash Registers to Reduce Tax Evasion in Tunisia

The fiscal advisor, Mohamed Salah Ayari, announced on Sunday that the implementation of electronic cash registers in cafes and restaurants will significantly reduce tax evasion and strengthen tax equity in Tunisia.

Implementation Phases

This system, which aims to ensure transparent tracing of sales and consumption operations, will be deployed gradually according to a four-phase calendar:

  • November 1, 2025: Entry into force for classified tourist restaurants, tea rooms, and second and third category cafes.
  • July 1, 2026: Extension to other legal entities operating in the restaurant, fast food, and similar activities, with the exception of classified tourist establishments.
  • July 1, 2027: Application to individual persons subject to the real tax regime.
  • July 1, 2028: Generalization to other individual persons not required to keep accounting records and not subject to the real tax regime.

Call to Citizens

Mohamed Salah Ayari also called on citizens to systematically request their receipts when making purchases in cafes and restaurants, reminding them that tax agents can conduct checks as simple customers to verify the compliance of sales registration and sanction offenders.
