Tunisia Experiences a Scorching Summer in 2025
Tunisia witnessed a hot summer in 2025, with the southern and southwestern regions being particularly affected. According to the National Institute of Meteorology (INM), the summer of 2025 is among the hottest since 1950, as stated in its seasonal climate bulletin.
Rainfall Deficit
In terms of rainfall, the summer of 2025 was generally deficient, with an estimated 40% shortage at the national level. The southern part of the country experienced almost no rainfall.
June Rainfall
During June, the rainfall was characterized by a significant deficit in most regions, especially in the center and south of the country. The northern regions and highlands experienced meteorological instability on June 18 and 19 due to the infiltration of cold air, leading to the formation of thunderstorms and rainfall. As a result, the north of the country accumulated 78.8 mm of rainfall, representing 58% of the normal amount. The center of the country received almost no rainfall, with a total of 3.2 mm. The southern region experienced a rainfall deficit of around 80%.
July Rainfall
In July, the rainfall was characterized by a surplus due to episodes of thunderstorms. The northern part of the country accumulated 83.9 mm of rainfall in 10 of its meteorological stations, representing 147% of the normal amount. The center of the country received rainfall that was almost normal, with a total of 45.6 mm, compared to the normal amount of 47.1 mm. The southern stations accumulated 5.8 mm of rainfall, slightly above the normal amount of 5.5 mm.
August Rainfall
In August, periods of rainfall occurred in the central western region, sometimes accompanied by thunderstorms and strong gusts, except in the southern regions where the weather remained dry for most of the month. These periods alternated with calmer and hotter periods in the western and northern parts of the country. On average, throughout the month and across Tunisia, the rainfall was characterized by a significant deficit that affected the entire country, especially the southern regions.
Seasonal Rainfall Deficit
At the seasonal level, the total rainfall accumulated was 411.7 mm, while the normal amount for the same stations (26 synoptic stations) is 678.9 mm, representing a deficit of 40%.
Temperature Records
The average temperature reached 28.8°C, exceeding the normal amount by 1.2°C. With this deviation, the summer of 2025 is ranked as the 9th hottest summer in Tunisia since 1950. The maximum temperatures reached 35.3°C, exceeding the normal amount (34.1°C) by 1.2°C. The minimum temperatures rose to 22.3°C, exceeding the normal amount (21.1°C) by 1.2°C.
