Tunisia’s Ministry of Trade and Export Development Announces Special Ramadan Support Measures

The Ministry of Trade and Export Development will implement a specific scheme during Ramadan to guarantee that needy families have access to subsidised vegetable oil. The programme will rely on the database created during the COVID‑19 pandemic.

  • Coordination: The measure will be rolled out in close collaboration with the Ministry of Social Affairs, announced Minister of Trade Samir Abid on Wednesday during a plenary session of the National Council of Regions and Districts (CNRD).
  • Strategic stock: A strategic reserve of several staple products has been built in anticipation of the holy month, including eggs, milk, tea, rice, sugar, and coffee—items that have suffered shortages in the past.
  • Supply‑chain governance: The improvement is credited to better governance of supply‑chain circuits within the Office of Trade of Tunisia (OCT).

Red Meat and Market Regulation

  • The ministry is intensifying inspection campaigns at butcher shops to curb rising red‑meat prices.
  • Minister Abid highlighted that the “Ellouhoum” company has set up sales points for butchers across various regions, notably in El Ouardia and several locations in Greater Tunis, to help stabilise the market.

Export Promotion Initiatives

  • A new programme to promote Tunisian brands is under development.
  • The Export Promotion Centre (Cepex) plans to organise around 60 events abroad to showcase the country’s flagship products, especially olive oil and dates.
  • Ongoing support for export‑oriented SMEs aims to diversify markets toward Asia, North and South America, Russia, and China.

Competition Law Reform

  • The Competition Council is currently reviewing nearly 600 cases.
  • A draft reform of the Competition Law will soon be submitted to the government for consideration before being examined by the Assembly of the People’s Representatives.
