Chikungunya Outbreak in Jiangmen, China: Emergency Public Health Intervention Triggered
The authorities in Jiangmen, a city in the Guangdong province of China, have launched an emergency public health intervention after reporting 1,714 cases of Chikungunya fever. This viral disease, transmitted by mosquitoes, has sparked a strong mobilization effort to prevent its spread.
Fortunately, all cases recorded so far are mild, with no severe complications or fatalities. The Jiangmen government has implemented a level III emergency response to proactively manage the situation.
Understanding the Disease: What is Chikungunya?
Chikungunya is an acute infectious disease caused by the virus of the same name. It is transmitted to humans through the bite of infected mosquitoes, primarily the Asian tiger mosquito.
The main symptoms are:
- Sudden and high fever
- Skin rashes
- Intense joint pain that can last for weeks or even months
