Regional Delegate of the Office in Sousse Reports on Tobacco Cessation Efforts
Sousse, Tunisia - May 23, 2024
Hatem Houimel, the regional delegate of the Office in Sousse, has revealed that the success rate of young people who have managed to quit smoking through the "Ami des jeunes pour l'arrêt du tabac" (Friend of Youth for Tobacco Cessation) spaces and consultations in Sousse and other governorates ranges between 7% and 8%. According to Houimel, these figures are close to the global averages.
Speaking to a radio station on the sidelines of a manifestation held today in Sousse under the slogan "Sousse respire pour une génération sans tabac" (Sousse Breathes for a Tobacco-Free Generation) as part of the World No Tobacco Day celebrations, Houimel acknowledged that the current success rate remains low. However, he expressed optimism that it can be improved through continued awareness campaigns and the organization of such events.
Houimel also disclosed that the dedicated consultations aimed at encouraging young people to quit smoking in various governorates provide free medication to help them overcome nicotine addiction.
Moreover, he emphasized the importance of raising awareness about the dangers of "la première expérience" (the first experience), warning that the age of victims at this stage has dropped to as low as 10 years old. According to him, this represents a hazardous gateway to tobacco dependence and other substance abuse, including cannabis and other drugs.
Key Statistics:
- Success rate of young people quitting smoking: 7-8%
- Age of victims of tobacco-related issues: as low as 10 years old
Call to Action:
The regional delegate's remarks serve as a reminder of the need for continued efforts to raise awareness about the risks associated with tobacco use, particularly among young people.
