Despite Accelerated Interventions, Sousse's Public Space Cleanup Remains Inconclusive
The execution rate of municipal decisions related to demolitions and combating encroachments on public property does not exceed 40%. This figure is deemed largely insufficient in light of local expectations.
The volume of recorded offenses, ranging from 700 to 900 files, far surpasses the current pace of municipal services. This situation necessitates a massive mobilization effort, both in terms of personnel and technical equipment. However, the Sousse municipality has not remained inactive, doubling its intervention rate to achieve two to three evacuation or demolition operations per week.
The dossier of buildings threatening collapse constitutes another pressing concern for the city. Approximately 400 dilapidated structures are identified, with some requiring complete demolition and others necessitating restoration and consolidation work. These sensitive cases are currently being handled on a case-by-case basis by technical services.
To pressure recalcitrant property owners into taking action, the Sousse municipality has taken a firmer stance. It has initiated procedures to seize the land titles of those who have not yet regularized their legal situation. This measure aims to unlock files that have been pending for several years.
