Global Fleet Soumoud Member Announces Flotilla's Departure to Break Gaza Blockade
Khaled Boujemaa, a member of the coordination committee of the Global Fleet Soumoud to break the Gaza blockade, announced on Friday that five ships from the flotilla docked yesterday at the Marina port in Bizerte. The remaining Tunisian, Algerian, and Spanish ships are expected to join them today.
Initially scheduled to depart on Wednesday, September 10, from the port of Sidi Bou Saïd, the departure to Gaza was postponed to Friday and then to Saturday to allow for the rearrangement of the departure point. According to Boujemaa, the departure could not take place on Friday due to logistical constraints, but it is confirmed for Saturday afternoon, subject to favorable weather conditions and after completing security and customs arrangements.
Key Details
- The flotilla consists of seven Tunisian ships carrying approximately 160 activists.
- The change in departure port from Sidi Bou Saïd to Bizerte is due to technical and security reasons, including the small size of the Sidi Bou Saïd port, its inability to accommodate certain ships, and the shallow water depth.
- In contrast, the port of Bizerte offers better infrastructure and facilitates the securing of the flotilla, unlike Sidi Bou Saïd, which is located near a residential area.
Next Steps
The flotilla's departure is now set for Saturday afternoon, pending favorable weather conditions and the completion of security and customs arrangements. The Global Fleet Soumoud aims to break the Gaza blockade, and the departure of the flotilla marks a significant step towards this goal.
