Tunisia Calls on International Community to Support Palestinian People
Tunisia has called on the international community to assume its responsibilities towards the Palestinian people, enabling them to establish their state, now recognized by over 160 countries.
Main Demands Expressed by Tunisian Foreign Minister
The Tunisian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mohamed-Ali Nafti, expressed this demand on the occasion of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People, celebrated on November 29th of each year. A commemorative conference was held at the International Diplomatic Academy in Tunis, under the theme "Palestine from Recognition to Statehood".
Call to Action
"Tunisia calls on all states to assume their legal responsibility by taking effective and concrete measures to enforce international justice (...), in order to put an end to the unprecedented manipulation of the foundations of humanitarian action," Nafti added, calling for the condemnation of "serious violations of international humanitarian law committed by the occupation and to prosecute them, to put an end to the occupation and to refrain from providing financial, political, and military support to these policies".
International Community Urged to Act
"Tunisia also calls on the international community to act immediately, effectively, and responsibly to counter the desperate attempts to classify the Palestinian cause and to restore the role of the United Nations in its settlement and in the establishment of peace and international security, and calls for preventing any plan of forced displacement and fait accompli policy and respecting the sovereignty of the State of Palestine," he pleaded.
Palestine Recognized as a Sovereign State
For Tunisia, Palestine is now a full-fledged state, in accordance with international law and recognized by no less than 160 countries. "The time has come to recognize its legitimate right to be a full member of the United Nations without further delay or hesitation," Nafti declared, affirming that Tunisia "will continue to provide its firm and unconditional support to the right of the Palestinian people to recover all their legitimate and inalienable rights, which, we repeat, will not fade with time, including their right to establish their independent and sovereign state on all Palestinian territory, with Al-Quds as its capital".
Ongoing Violations
The celebration of the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People comes as violations and aggression continue on the ground in Gaza and the occupied West Bank.
Devastating Situation in Gaza
According to the Ambassador of the State of Palestine to Tunis, Raami Farouq Kadoumi, until yesterday, attacks had taken place in Jenine, Tulkarem, and Toubass, among other places, while in Gaza, scenes of bombardment, catastrophe, and desolation continue. Kadoumi stated that 92% of the city of Gaza has been destroyed, as well as 300,000 residential units and 80% of health facilities.
International Support Urged
What is happening in Gaza is a true "holocaust", he emphasized, reiterating the Palestinian authorities' commitment to "international legitimacy", which recognizes the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people and the illegality of the occupation.
Call for Unified International Support
In this context, Kadoumi affirmed that the future of Gaza cannot be separated from that of Palestine, calling for international support for "one state, one government, and one army" within the 1967 borders, with East Al-Quds as the capital, and guarantees for the return of refugees and full representation at the United Nations.
UN Representative's Message
The message was consolidated by Rana Taha, the UN Coordinator in Tunis, who spoke on behalf of UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, calling for respect for the recently concluded peace plan and the implementation of the two-state solution, according to UN resolutions and the 1967 borders, with Al-Quds as the capital of both states. "There is a glimmer of hope," she suggested.
