Engineer Brain Drain: Material Factors Remain the Main Cause

The Dean of the Order of Engineers, Mohsen Gharssi, stated on Thursday, October 9, 2025, that material factors remain the primary cause of the emigration of Tunisian engineers, estimating that nearly 45,000 engineers have left the country over the past decade.

Key Points

  • Material factors are the main reason for engineer emigration
  • Nearly 45,000 engineers have left Tunisia in the last decade
  • Revision of the profession's status, improvement of financial and moral conditions, and increased responsibilities are necessary

During his appearance on Diwan Fm, Gharssi emphasized the need to:

  • Revise the profession's status
  • Improve the financial and moral conditions of engineers
  • Grant engineers more responsibilities in managing public technical establishments
  • Involve engineers in state-led studies and projects

Civic Engagement

The Dean also highlighted the profession's civic engagement, noting that over 120 school and high school construction projects are currently being carried out voluntarily by engineers "driven by a deep sense of national duty".

A Crucial Turning Point

Gharssi warned that "Tunisia is at a decisive turning point: either we build a modern, developed, and attractive country at the heart of the Mediterranean basin, or we plunge back into disorganization and mediocrity".
