University Hospital in Sidi Bouzid Performs Pioneering Medical Intervention
The University Hospital in Sidi Bouzid successfully performed a groundbreaking medical intervention on Wednesday, treating an acute infection of the gallbladder using a scanner, without resorting to surgery.
The head of the diagnostic and interventional radiology department, Hedil Darghouthi, told the TAP Agency that this operation was performed on a 63-year-old patient suffering from acute inflammation of the gallbladder that had spread to the liver, causing septicemia. He noted that this is a first in public and private hospitals in priority regions.
Darghouthi explained that the patient was admitted to the radiology department for examinations after presenting signs of generalized infection. The diagnosis by scanner allowed for the detection of severe inflammation of the gallbladder. "In similar cases, surgical intervention is generally required, but the patient's condition, weakened by other illnesses and the acute infection, did not allow for a classic operation," Darghouthi explained. The intervention in the radiology department allowed for the stabilization of the patient by treating the blood infection as a first step. An endoscopic intervention could then replace surgery, he added.
For his part, the director of the University Hospital in Sidi Bouzid, Anouar Bahri, highlighted that this medical first in the interior regions aims to bring healthcare services closer to citizens and reduce the need to travel to other hospitals.
