Food Safety Crackdown: 5.4 Tonnes of Solid Food and 1.8 Million Liters of Liquid Products Seized

The control teams of the National Institute for Health Security of Food Products (INSSPA), in collaboration with security forces, have seized approximately 5.4 tonnes of solid food and 1.8 million liters of liquid products deemed unfit for consumption during interventions carried out in several governorates across the country.

In a statement published on its official page this Wednesday, the INSSPA specified that these operations aim to protect consumer health and combat offenses that jeopardize food safety.

Cases Reported by Region:

  • Béja: Seizure of a 200 kg cow carcass transported illegally in a vehicle, showing signs of hepatitis, making the meat dangerous for human consumption.
  • Siliana: Discovery of a clandestine slaughterhouse that does not meet any health standards, with the seizure of 670 kg of poultry meat and 169 kg of live chickens. Additionally, 942 kg of live chickens without veterinary certificates or traceability were seized.
  • Manouba: Seizure of food products of unknown origin, stored in conditions that do not respect health regulations.
  • Tunis: In a disorganized warehouse, controllers seized 1,856 liters of liquids, including 1,108 liters of vinegar, 700 liters of caramel concentrate, and 48 bottles of orange blossom water packaged in non-compliant plastic containers.
  • Bizerte: In a restaurant-tea room, 95 kg of food products were seized, including 44 kg of frozen sliced lemons, 2.5 kg of frozen beaten eggs, 3.5 kg of cooked lasagna, and 45 kg of pastries, all stored in conditions that do not meet hygiene standards.
  • Sousse: Seizure of 1,500 kg of traditional harissa packaged in non-food grade plastic containers, some of which did not have any production date indication, in clear violation of traceability rules.

The INSSPA emphasized that these control campaigns will continue in all regions, with the objective of strengthening national food security, limiting abuses, and preserving consumer health.
