Farhat Brik, Secretary General of the Sfax Municipality, confirmed today, Tuesday, November 25, 2025, that recent work has been carried out on the project to renovate and revitalize the city of Sfax, based on several previous studies.
Project Overview
In a statement to the radio, the official specified that the heart of the project is the rehabilitation and development of the old city, which suffers from several shortcomings: more than 700 buildings threatened with collapse, several archaeological and historical monuments in danger, as well as infrastructure problems. This situation has led many businesses to close and institutions to leave the area. The project aims to restore the city's radiance and vitality.
Partners and Funding
Different studies have been gathered, and coordination has been established with several parties. The main partner of the project will be the Urban Rehabilitation and Renovation Agency (ARRU), under the supervision of the Ministry of Equipment. The project has received preliminary approval pending the finalization of the dossier. A sum of 12 million dinars has been allocated for the redevelopment of certain spaces, marking the first launch of this major project, which will require significant funding, including foreign funds, state funds, and own funds.
Project Timeline
The in-depth study and data collection will start to determine the approximate budget of the project. The project is part of those programmed by the municipality for the year 2026. Various administrations will participate to ensure the project's success. The technical committee that will work on the project will be created, and based on meetings and studies, tenders will be launched. The studies should be ready, and the project will effectively start at the end of next year (2026).
Additional Initiatives
In addition to this project, the traffic plan will be revised (a call for tenders has been launched), and everything related to traffic congestion has been prepared. Moreover, the old urban planning plan of Sfax, which had delayed many projects, will be revised to facilitate the future realization of investments.
Preparation for Major Events
Finally, he mentioned the preparation of Sfax for the organization of major events, citing coordination with actors in the tourism sector for the total solar eclipse of August 2, 2027. The realization of the project's component concerning the municipality will begin in 2026, with the creation of a technical committee and the launch of tenders based on meetings and studies.
