Sfax Municipality Launches Major Urban Project to Revitalize Historic Medina and Surrounding Neighborhoods

The municipality of Sfax has launched a significant urban project aimed at rehabilitating the medina, the Bab Bhar area, and adjacent neighborhoods, including Bekville and New Sfax. The initial contribution from the municipality exceeds 10 million dinars.

Project Objectives

The project plans to:

  • Restore historic buildings
  • Maintain public networks
  • Develop alleys, squares, and facades
  • Highlight the medina's walls and entrances
  • Create activities to revitalize the historic center and improve tourist attractiveness

Bab Bhar Rehabilitation

In Bab Bhar, the project aims to:

  • Rehabilitate ruined buildings
  • Develop Bab Diwan, Independence, and Resistance squares
  • Review the traffic plan and urban development scheme
  • Improve infrastructure and urban transportation
  • Create covered parking lots, including one on the former "Steel" site
  • Transform the old governorate headquarters into a regional museum
  • Accelerate the digital library project

Neighborhood Renovation

Several adjacent neighborhoods, including Zaytouna and the compensatory district, will be renovated. The Touma park will undergo a renovation estimated at around 2 million dinars, along with other public green spaces.

Project Coordination and Success

The municipality's secretary general, Farhat Brik, emphasized the need for coordination between all administrations and stakeholders to ensure the project's success, highlighting its strategic and global nature. The Urban Renewal and Development Agency noted that the project is an economic and social lever, enhancing tourist attractiveness and improving the urban environment for citizens while respecting sustainability and aesthetic principles.

Project Implementation

A project steering team comprising all concerned administrations will be established, and a future meeting involving civil society has been announced. This initiative is expected to bring significant benefits to the city and its inhabitants, making Sfax a more attractive and vibrant destination for tourists and residents alike.
