Historic Kidney Transplant Performed at Habib Bourguiba Hospital in Sfax
The Habib Bourguiba Hospital in Sfax has achieved a major milestone by performing its first-ever single-intervention kidney transplant, marking a significant advancement in the field of organ transplantation in the region. The operation involved laparoscopically removing a kidney from a healthy donor and immediately implanting it in the patient during the same surgical session, announced the Ministry of Health on Saturday evening.
The Intervention
The procedure was carried out in two precise stages:
Phase 1: Laparoscopic Kidney Removal
The kidney was removed from the donor using a laparoscopic technique, which reduces pain and accelerates the donor's recovery.
Phase 2: Immediate Implantation
The kidney was immediately implanted in the recipient, following a rigorous surgical protocol that ensures the preservation of the organ and the success of the transplant.
A Tunisian Medical Team's Success
This achievement was made possible by a high-level Tunisian medical team, led by Professor Mourad Haj Slimane, Head of the Renal and Urological Surgery Department, and Professor Hichem Cheikh Rouhou, Head of the Anesthesia and Intensive Care Department. The operation also benefited from the expertise of Dr. Grégoire Robart from Bordeaux Hospital, as part of a cooperation and experience-sharing program.
A Milestone for Tunisian Medicine
According to the Ministry of Health, this success illustrates the continuous development of Tunisian medical skills in the field of surgery and organ transplantation, reinforcing the position of Habib Bourguiba Hospital as a reference center for advanced surgical techniques.
