Iranian Agency Mehr Reports Series of Micro-Seisms in Pardis Region

Date: May 13, 2026

A series of nine micro-seisms shook the Pardis region, east of Tehran, on the evening of May 12, 2026, according to Iranian news agency Mehr. This unusual seismic activity has raised concerns among experts about the possibility of a major catastrophe hitting the Iranian capital.

The repetition of these tremors has sparked fears that the accumulated tectonic pressure beneath the metropolis may eventually lead to a large-scale earthquake. Tehran is situated near several active fault lines, and while earthquakes are common in the region, such a succession of tremors in a short period is rare.

Residents living near the Mosha fault, one of the most active in the country, felt these nocturnal vibrations. According to official media, the strongest tremor reached a magnitude of 4.6 on the Richter scale. Although this surge in activity caused no human losses or material damage, it has put authorities on high alert.

Sismologist Mehdi Zare, quoted by Mehr, highlights the scientific uncertainty surrounding these events. It remains difficult to determine whether these tremors allow for the release of accumulated energy, thereby reducing future risks, or if they are instead precursors to more violent seismic activity along the fault system surrounding the capital.

Beyond geology, the expert points to Tehran's vulnerability due to its exceptional urban density, high population concentration, and insufficient preparedness. With over 14 million inhabitants, the metropolis faces fragile infrastructure and urban congestion that would complicate rescue efforts in the event of a disaster. For years, specialists have been warning about the potentially apocalyptic consequences of a major earthquake near the city.
