Ministry of Equipment and Housing to Unveil Integrated Strategy for Revitalising Sebkha Séjoumi

The Ministry of Equipment and Housing is set to present, this Tuesday, an integrated strategy aimed at rehabilitating and developing the banks of Sebkha Séjoumi. The goal is to turn this long‑neglected, polluted area into a sustainable urban space and a genuine green lung for Greater Tunis.

Presentation Schedule

  • First briefing: Representatives of the local councils under the jurisdiction of the Municipality of Tunis.
  • Second briefing: Members of the Séjoumi local council.

Project Overview

Dubbed “Integrated Strategy for the Development and Planning of the Séjoumi Lake Banks,” the initiative seeks to balance:

  • Environmental protection
  • Urban valorisation
  • Improvement of the living environment for residents of surrounding neighbourhoods

The core ambition is to transform the sebkha—currently viewed as a source of nuisance—into a planned natural space featuring:

  • Green zones
  • Leisure areas
  • Collective facilities

Key Actions

Action Description
Site sanitation Removal of illegal dumps and construction debris that degrade the wetland.
Hydraulic infrastructure Installation of water‑treatment plants and new drainage systems to improve water quality and boost storm‑water evacuation capacity, protecting nearby residential districts from flooding.
Tourism & leisure infrastructure Development of attractions that will reshape the sebkha’s image and make it an appealing destination for locals and visitors.
Concrete implementation Moving from promises to tangible results to finally address long‑standing environmental problems affecting residents.

Scope & Scale

  • Area covered: Approximately 700 hectares.
  • Expected outcomes: Creation of an integrated urban environment that includes sustainable living zones, extensive green spaces, and recreational facilities.
  • Urban‑nature balance: Bring the sebkha closer to the city while preserving its natural ecosystem.

Funding & Feasibility Study

  • Funding source: 3 million Tunisian dinars from the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development.
  • Study timeline: Launched in 2025, the feasibility study will run for 24 months.
  • Objectives of the study:
    • Identify viable projects.
    • Estimate costs.
    • Explore implementation possibilities through public‑private partnerships.

Long‑Term Vision
