Exhibition: "Sea of Sicily and Tunisia, from one coast to another"

The Press — Opening, next Friday at 17:00 at the Sainte Croix Presbytery, Rue Jemaâ EZ-Zitouna, in Tunis, of a photographic exhibition organized at the initiative of two associations, one Tunisian, recently created to promote photographic art in Tunisia, Association Didon and Enée (the two legendary characters who met in Sicily), and the other Sicilian, I Colori della vita (The Colors of Life), very active since 2008. The initiators have given this event the title of "Sea of Sicily and Tunisia, from one coast to another".

A Cultural Bridge between Tunisia and Sicily

It is worth noting that the presbytery, which is part of the old Sainte Croix parish, the first Catholic place of worship in the Medina of Tunis in operation since 1837 and ceded to the Tunisian authorities after its decommissioning in 1964, has been restored by Italy and equipped to serve as a cultural center dependent on the municipality of the capital. By invoking the spirits of the Ancients, the organizers sought to build a bridge across the liquid borders that separate the two shores that form the Strait of Sicily, renamed by them for the occasion "Sea of Sicily and Tunisia". They explain that "the exhibition aims to revive the collective memory and promote intercultural exchange between the two countries by offering the public a visual journey through 60 photographs exhibited in a logic of common narrative giving visibility to little-known and considered places and people who keep this history alive."

Contemporary Stories to Give Visibility to People and Places

Among the group of ten photographers (five from each country), some are known nationally and internationally for their work. Others are winners of international photography competitions and all have numerous publications to their credit. The organizers specify that "the ten photographers, with different but complementary views, have managed to capture the soul of the places and people who inhabit these coasts and tell contemporary stories that resonate with each other in a common dialogue with the aim of giving visibility to the people and places considered." Note that this exhibition will end on September 21. It will be itinerant and will take place over the current year and the next.

Upcoming Exhibition Dates

After Tunis, it will be held in Mahdia before crossing the sea to be held in Sicily, in Trapani, at the San Domenico church, and then in Mazara del Vallo, at the Santo Vassallo gallery, in the Filippo Corridoni monumental complex. The dates for these last three events have not yet been fixed.
