Violence in Schools: A Growing Concern

The Head of the Social Prevention Department, under the Directorate of Judicial Police at the Ministry of Interior, Principal Commissioner Mohamed Ali Jlidi, stated that the majority of cases of violence in schools occur in colleges and high schools, affecting students aged 13 to 18.

Invited to speak on National Radio on Tuesday, December 9, 2025, Mohamed Ali Jlidi specified that the violence recorded against students can be physical, moral, or digital.

A Multi-Faceted Approach to Combating Violence

Jlidi emphasized that combating this phenomenon cannot be done solely through a security-based approach, but rather requires the convergence of efforts from all stakeholders, including parents, educational staff, and concerned ministries, to protect children from violence.

The Principal Commissioner highlighted that the security institution has a preventive role and a repressive role in securing the environment of educational institutions to prevent violence.

Intervention and Prevention Strategies

The guest on National Radio explained that the intervention of security units is carried out smoothly, taking into account the specificity of children, indicating that they work to find alternative solutions before resorting to imprisonment.

The Head of the Social Prevention Department affirmed that the law, whether it be the Penal Code, the Child Protection Code, or Law No. 58 of 2017, sanctions any perpetrator of violence, including parents.

Reporting Cases of Violence

Mohamed Ali Jlidi indicated that the obligation to report cases of violence against children falls on all citizens, who can call the free numbers 197, 193, and 1899.

The speaker specified that children can report cases of violence either by calling the free numbers or by informing educational staff, who will alert the relevant authorities.

A Collective Responsibility

The security official estimated that it is the duty of every citizen to confront violence, and if they are unable to intervene, they must inform the security authorities.

By working together, we can create a safer and more supportive environment for all students, and help prevent violence in schools.
