Back to School in Tunisia: Over 2.5 Million Students Return to Class
More than 2.5 million students and pupils will return to 6,100 preparatory, primary, and secondary schools, as well as 350 higher education institutions, including 80 private institutions and 24 higher institutes of technical education (ISET).
Key Dates
- Most students will start their new academic year on September 12
- Pupils will return to school on September 15
- Some students from certain higher education institutions have already begun their university courses since September 2
Equipment and Maintenance
All necessary means are being mobilized to ensure a smooth start to the new 2025-2026 academic year.
- The total number of students is estimated to be around 2.3 million, with 1.9 million pupils and 1.6 million middle and high school students
- There is an expected increase of around 2% in student numbers compared to last year
- The 154,000 teachers will return to their posts on September 13
Ministry of Education Efforts
The Ministry of Education has announced a comprehensive plan to upgrade and maintain infrastructure across all governorates.
- Significant funds have been allocated to meet the needs of regions and pedagogical requirements
- Over 85,000 tables and a large quantity of chairs have been added to existing equipment
- Computer kits and computers have been installed or will be installed before the start of the school year
- For the first time, the Ministry of Education has implemented a program to make timetables available to students and teachers on the ministry's website
- Lists of teachers affected by transfers or assignments have been published on the ministry's website
- Official lists of school supplies (textbooks and notebooks) have been established for all levels of education
Higher Education
The Council of Universities met on September 8, chaired by the Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research (MESRS).
- The meeting was attended by university presidents and council members
- The participants reviewed the outcomes of the commission tasked with revising the LMD system
- Measures were taken to facilitate administrative procedures for students and holders of doctoral degrees
Technical Issues
Some technical issues have been reported on the student registration website, with many students experiencing difficulties due to an incorrect link or site saturation. The website needs to be updated to resolve these issues.
