Road Accident Toll Alarms Tunisian Authorities
Since January 1, 2026, Tunisia has witnessed a staggering 400+ road fatalities, according to Afef Ben Ghenia, President of the Road Safety Association, who shared this disturbing statistic on the Radio Nationale.
Young Victims Account for Half of Road Accident Deaths
The President highlighted a particularly concerning statistic: half of the victims of these accidents are young people. In response to this alarming trend, she urged the authorities to strictly implement the national multisectoral road safety strategy. According to her, this plan is a significant achievement for the country, but its effectiveness depends on its actual implementation on the ground to curb this deadly cycle.
Tougher Measures Needed to Reverse the Trend
To reverse the trend, Afef Ben Ghenia recommends strengthening security and legislative responses. She emphasized the importance of:
- Automated Fines: Generalizing the automated collection of fines to increase accountability among drivers.
- Increased Financial Penalties: Strengthening financial sanctions to deter high-risk behaviors and protect human lives.
The goal is clear: to hold drivers more accountable and severely punish reckless behavior to safeguard human lives.
