Road Accidents in 2025: A Decrease in Injuries but an Increase in Fatalities
The number of people injured in road accidents has reached 4,883 from the beginning of the year until September 19, 2025. This represents a decrease of nearly 16% compared to the same period in 2024, according to data published by the National Road Safety Observatory.
However, the number of road fatalities has increased, rising from 808 last year to 876 for the same period in 2025.
The total number of accidents has decreased, with 3,638 accidents recorded compared to 4,243 in 2024, a reduction of 605 accidents. The Observatory's data reveals that the main causes of accidents, deaths, and injuries are:
- Distraction and lack of attention are responsible for 40.54% of accidents, 29.34% of deaths, and 35.70% of injuries.
- Excessive speed is responsible for over 15% of accidents, nearly 27% of deaths, and around 18% of injuries. Other causes include:
- Failure to yield, in third position
- Changes in direction
- Crossing the road
- Failure to comply with the highway code
In terms of geographical distribution, the governorate of Tunis is at the top of the list for the number of accidents (489) and injuries (579). However, it is the governorate of Sfax that has the highest number of fatalities, with 92 deaths, followed by Tunis (82 deaths), Sidi Bouzid (72 deaths), and Nabeul (60 deaths).
