Tunisia Sees Slight Decline in Road Accidents, But Rise in Fatalities

Official Statistics Reveal Alarming Trends in Road Safety

Samia Messaoud, head of the Road Traffic Communication Service at the National Observatory of Road Safety (ONSR), has revealed the official statistics on road accidents recorded in Tunisia from January 1 to May 20, 2026. Despite a notable decline in the total number of accidents and injured individuals compared to the same period last year, the continued rise in fatalities remains the most concerning indicator.

Tunisia's roads have seen a total of 1,702 road accidents between January 1 and May 20, 2026, representing a 5% decrease from 2025. These accidents have resulted in 2,194 injured individuals, marking a positive decline of 22%.

However, Samia Messaoud emphasized that the primary concern of road safety authorities lies in the number of fatalities, which has increased by 11% compared to the previous year. Describing these numbers as "shocking," she noted that the average daily number of road victims in Tunisia now ranges between two and four.

Mme Messaoud attributed the severity of these accidents to a range of irresponsible behaviors on public roads, including:

  • Excessive speed
  • Inattention (drowsiness/distraction)
  • Driving while fatigued

According to detailed data from the ONSR, young individuals aged 19-29 years old are the leading cause of road accidents, with a rate of 50%. Samia Messaoud attributed this alarming indicator to what she described as "reckless driving, excessive speed, and impulsive and irresponsible behavior," whether in cars or on motorcycles.

Analyzing the modes of transportation involved in these tragedies during the first five months of the year, the statistics show that light vehicles occupy the top spot with 960 accidents resulting in 210 fatalities. Motorcycles come in second, being involved in 846 accidents that left a heavy toll of 192 fatalities.

In conclusion to her statement, the head of the ONSR's communication service reiterated her urgent appeal to all road users, particularly young individuals, to exercise total vigilance, be aware of the dangers of the road, and avoid behaviors of exhibitionism and impulsivity to ensure the safety of all and put an end to this ongoing human hemorrhage on the roads.
