Road Accidents: 51% of Fatalities Occur Among 18-44 Year Olds
A recent study conducted by the National Road Safety Observatory (ONSR) reveals a disturbing link between reckless driving behaviors and young people. The study, which tracked over 43,000 cars and 14,000 motorcycles, found that individuals between 18 and 24 years old often disregard road safety codes related to speed, with 86.5% of them using their mobile phones while driving.
Key Findings
- 51% of road accident fatalities occur among individuals between 18 and 44 years old
- 500 deaths are recorded annually among drivers in the 18-24 age group
- 180 deaths occur annually among drivers between 45 and 59 years old
- Over 255 fatalities are recorded among drivers aged 60 and above
Safety Violations
The study also highlighted the following safety violations:
- 49% of drivers do not wear their seatbelts
- 40% of drivers exceed speed limits
- 11% of drivers use their mobile phones while driving
- 87% of motorcyclists do not wear helmets, resulting in 434 deaths since the beginning of the year
Preventable Deaths
According to the study, one in four road deaths could be avoided by following basic safety rules, such as:
- Wearing seatbelts, which reduces the risk of mortality by 50% (front seats) and 75% (rear seats)
- Wearing helmets, which reduces the risk of death by 40-70% for motorcyclists This could potentially save between 250 and 320 lives per year.
Road Accident Statistics
- 375 people have died in road accidents
- 257 pedestrians have been killed in road accidents
The study's findings emphasize the need for increased awareness and adherence to road safety rules, particularly among young drivers, to reduce the number of preventable deaths on the roads.
